Field Stripping an AR-15 Step 1: Clear the Rifle Step 2: Remove sling.
Step 3: Remove Handguards (only if you can see dirt or corrosion through the vent holes). Pull back on the delta ring and pull the handguards out.
Step 4: Push the takedown pin as far as it will go (you may use a cartridge to help).
Step 5: Pivot the upper receiver from the lower receiver.
Step 6: Push the receiver pivot pin.
Step 7: Separate the upper and lower receivers.
Step 8: Pull back the charging handle.
Step 9: Remove the bolt carrier and bolt.
Step 10: Remove the charging handle.
Step 11: Remove the firing pin retaining pin. (use a cartridge to help start it)
Step 12: Put the bolt assembly in the locked position by pushing in the bolt.
Step 13: Remove the firing pin by allowing it to drop out of the rear of the bolt carrier into your hand.
Step 14: Remove the bolt cam pin by turning it one-quarter turn and lifting it out.
Step 15: Pull the bolt assembly from the carrier.
NOTE: Perform Steps 16 & 17 only when the parts are dirty or damaged. Step 16a: Remove the extractor pin by pushing it out with the firing pin (use care not to damage the firing pin)
Step 16b: Lift out the extractor and spring, taking care so that the spring does not separate from the extractor. (NOTE: Press the top of the extractor to check spring function.)
Step 17a: Release the buffer by pressing the buffer and depressing the retainer.
Step 17b: Remove the buffer and action spring separating the buffer from the spring
Field Strip Completed. Do not disassemble the rifle further!
